I have held distinguished visiting professorships at leading universities in North America, Europe, Australia and East Asia, acted as consultant to UNCTAD and directed a major scientific programme in the European Science Foundation.  I was awarded the Victoria Medal of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) in 2001 for 'advancing research on globalization and economic geography' and the Centenary Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in 2007 for 'distinguished contribution to the study of the geographies of the global economy'. In 2002, I was awarded an Honorary PhD by the University of Uppsala, Sweden and was a Fellow of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences.
