Thomas has a BA in philosophy from Cambridge University (1992), and a PhD in philosophy from University College London (2007). Before coming to Manchester, he held a Research Fellowship at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge (2005-07). He spent the best part of the 90s (also the best part of his twenties) directing plays and operas. He has given philosophical talks at the Universities of Cologne, California Berkeley, Konstanz, Helsinki, Turin, Lund, Vienna, Luiss Guido Carli (Rome), London, Cambridge, Sheffield, Nottingham, Warwick, York, Stirling, Southampton, Lancaster, and at the inter-university centre, Dubrovnik.
