Biography

MA (Arch), DPhil (Oxon)
Maria Kaika holds a D.Phil. in Geography from the University of Oxford, and an MA in Architecture from the National Technical University of Athens as well as professional qualifications as an architect. Her previous posts include: University Lecturer, Oxford University School of Geography; Fellow, St. Edmund Hall, Oxford; Director of Studies in Human Geography at St Hugh's College, Oxford; Departmental Lecturer at the School of Geography, Oxford; Junior Research Fellow at Linacre College, Oxford; Lecturer in Human Geography at St Peter's College Oxford.
Dr Kaika is co-Editor of the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research. She sits on the Executive board of the ‘Remaking Cities Institute’ of Carnegie Mellon University and the Heinz Foundation, and is appointed Trustee of the Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies. She was awarded a Distinguished Visiting Fellowship at Queen Mary Graduate School of Social Sciences (Sept-Dec 2007), and a Visiting Professorship at the University of Leuven (spring 2008). In 2006 she was Visiting Professor at the European University (EUREX) in Urbino. She has acted as Treasurer of the Royal Geographical Society & Institute of British Geographers’ Urban Research Group (2003-06), advisor to the British Educational Excellence Board (Edexcel) on restructuring the curriculum for A level Urban geography (2006) and Teaching Liaison Officer for the Royal Geographical Society (2001-2006).
She is editorial board member of CITY: journal of urban trends and culture, and regular peer reviewer for leading Geography journals. She has acted as external examiner for the London School of Economics, UCL, Goldsmiths, the Universities of Otago, New Zealand, the National Technical University of Athens (Architecture), and the Harokopeio University of Athens (Geography). She is regular research funding assessor for the ESRC, and for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and appointed peer reviewer of the European Science Foundation Standing Committee for the Social Sciences (SCSS), the European Union, the Georgian Science Foundation, and the Latsis Foundation.
She has given seminars and public lectures for international academic institutions (Carnegie Mellon, Australian National University), policy organizations (UN Habitat, Royal Academy of Arts, Amnesty International, European Science Foundation, Architecture Foundation, European Environmental Bureau, Greek Environment Ministry) and the private sector (Seville Water company, Thames Water).
