Dr Darren Waldron - Research
Research interests
My research explores representations of gender, sexuality and ethnicity in French cinema and their reception. In my monograph, Queering Contemporary French Popular Cinema: Images and their Reception, I examine a range of recent French films that portray queer modes of desire and identity and the audience responses they elicit. My co-edited volume with Dr Isabelle Vanderschelden entitled France at the Flicks: Trends in Contemporary French Popular Cinema probes the evolution of popular French cinema over the past decade, as well as the increasing importance of les superproductions or blockbusters for French cinema audiences. I am currently working on a monograph on the director Jacques Demy for Manchester University Press and will be commencing a project on queer cinema in and out of France and Spain in February 2012 with my colleague Professor Christopher Perriam.
