Dr  Andrew Karvonen - Research

Research interests

I study the tensions between humans, nature, and technology in urban contexts using a transdisciplinary approach that combines ideas from Science and Technology Studies (STS), Urban Geography, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Environmental History. I am particularly interested in topics that address the sustainable development of cities, competing interpretations of nature and technology, the role of expertise and design thinking, and the promise of ecological citizenship and politics.

KEYWORDS: Urban political ecology, sustainable urban development, urban infrastructure, technical expertise, politics of design, Actor-Network Theory, American Pragmatism
